Thorverk has harvested Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria digitata from Breiðafjörður since the 1970s. The company was re-established in 1986.
The production plant operates with the consent of regional landowners and in accordance with national regulation and annual harvest allowances.
Harvest
Ascophyllum is trimmed between the lowest and highest tide. Laminaria is harvested from deeper waters in late autumn and winter.
Transport
The harvest is collected, bagged and brought to harbour on a vessel operated by Thorverk.
Geothermal drying
The crop is chopped and gently dried in a band dryer. Clean air is heated to a maximum of 80°C using local geothermal water.
Milling
The dried raw material is milled into defined sieve sizes for industrial customers.
